Such a Thing as a Free Lunch
By Matt Cornelius
One of the coolest ministries that our church started for student ministry was Freebie Wednesday. It was born out of the concept of “If you feed them, they will come.” Boy did they ever! Our trial run was in the fall of 2010. We served Sloppy Joes and fed lunch to 36 students. A young man ironically nicknamed “Tiny” put down 10 sandwiches that day. We knew that we had a ministry that would connect with the student population.
Within the first three years of Freebie Wednesday we were serving over 300 lunches every week. It was chaos but we loved it. From bikers bringing Christian rock to inspirational videos being played to the Gospel being preached, our church has grown God’s Kingdom through the ministry of Freebie Wednesday. Although this ministry has evolved over the past thirteen years and we are now serving dinner to students on Wednesday nights, it is still making a Kingdom impact today in Killeen. This ministry has allowed us to build bridges within our school campuses and impact the lives of thousands of students in Killeen and Harker Heights.
The original Freebie Wednesday Crew was Virginia Cloud, Kathryn Stephens, Becky Stringer, Marjorie Carrol, Irene Westerfield, Terry Tyler, Gwen Stewart, Joel Lytle, and David Alicea. We couldn’t have done this without them and the countless other volunteers who followed in their footsteps.
A special thanks to all that have served in Freebie Wednesday over the years.
Our church has grown God’s Kingdom through the ministry of Freebie Wednesday.
